Well, the answer is yes in most of the cases. But every time I asked my clients this question, it triggered something in them, especially if a website designer himself asking such a question. So ask yourself do you need a website?
The problem is that website design has become such a convenient process that this question does not matter. People generally think that let’s have a website anyways. I don’t disagree with it too. But this question can bring out some points that can make your site more relevant and work for you in a better way.
When I asked the same question to a client who wanted a simple business website for his legal consultancy services, he was like yes I need a site. I want to print it on my business cards. I asked him again, why do you really really need one? And then the answer came, that I want my customers to see my service and call me. I said why not then register yourself in some directory and mention your services there. I almost confused him.
But then with little more questioning and discussion, he said something that made sense, he told everytime a customer calls me to know more about my services, I would instead send him to my website than emailing him. Now he is really thinking. I could have also given him a list of reasons but I love it when I can help them figure it out. Then these reasons are their own, they keep it, they nourish it and they make it work. Well, he was delighted that he could figure this out himself. So for him, it was like an online brochure, that saves his time, his customers time and make him look more professional.
And this helped me make a website that fulfilled his core need perfectly. Websites need to be integrated into your business process, only then it is useful and serves its true purpose.
What is your reason to make a website?
