Quality of great designer is first to understand your business, your uniqueness and make a website that not only looks visually great but drives your business too.
Tell me about any of your project which was most interesting to you and why?
If he only talks about how great the website looks, then he is not the one for you. If he talks about all the effects, the technology he has used, then he is not the one. If he starts by saying that I helped my client to achieve a specific goal through the website, then that is a great beginning. If he talks about the small elements that he used on the site that greatly worked for that project, then he has really put energy into the design process. More involved he was in the project, more he will have to talk. If you can see or feel that thrill and passion in him while he tells you then you know he really loves what he does.
What can you do for my website?
If I was asked this question, I would say I can’t tell unless I know what you want out of your website. The designer may have created a website similar to your business but still, goals would differ. So if your designer asks you questions about your business then he is going in right direction. If he talks about how your customers can locate the information they are looking for then he understands website business. If he talks about the ways he can connect you with your customer then he might be the right one.
A website is a business tool that bridges the gap between you and your customer. A good designer can do this and much more than this and yet do it gracefully.
And lastly few words of advice for you as a client, don’t always blame the designer. A lot of times clients are too pushy, and they already seem to know how many pages they want and where they want what. Great if you know what you are talking about. But the fact you have come to a designer is because he is a specialist. Let him do his job.
If you are still unsure what you need out of your website, then go ahead and read my other blog post on “Do you really need a website?”.
Please share your experiences with your designer?
