After a long awaited year, Apple unveiled the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max as the successors to the popular iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, with a new squared-off industrial design, the A14 Bionic chip, a LiDAR Scanner, and MagSafe. As Apple's premium flagship offerings, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are the most fully-featured iPhones available.
This years iphone, the iphone 12 pro features 6.1 inch OLED Super Retina Display, slightly bigger than 5.8 inch display of its predecessor iphone 11 pro. This means that the larger phone will be able to display more content, with the UI elements of apps spaced further apart, and items such as the keyboard will be much bigger. The smaller phone however, (last year’s iphone 11 pro) would be more pocketable and easier to use with one hand. Thus the difference only lies in the screen size.
The new iphone also has a more boxy design unlike the iphone 11 pro which had rounded edges thus,
The iphone 12 pro has 3 front cameras (just like its predecessor). There the same wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto rear lens, each rated at 12MP. The True Depth front camera also stands at 12MP. It get 4x optical zoom, night mode, front portrait mode, 4K videos, portrait lightning, Deep Fusion, OIS, and more. These features are also included in the 11 pro. However, the difference lies in the addition of a LiDar scanner in the iphone 12 pro. This helps in improved AR and better autofocus and bokeh effect in the Night mode. In short, the iphone 12 pro will be able to take better images in lowlight conditions.
This year, the all the new iphones (including the 12 pro) support 5g. It gives realistic speeds upto 1.4 gbps. The 12 pro includes a cool feature called “Smart Data” mode that assesses whether you need 5g speeds and can switch back to 4g if it doesn’t think you need it, thus saving more battery when required.
The iphone is powered with a new A14 (the world’s first 5 nanometer chip set) and is said to be 40% more powerful than the A13 found in the 11 pro. However, one wont really notice a difference in speed in their day to day usage with the phone.
Unfortunately, the Iphone 12 pro hasn’t really changed in terms of battery life from its predecessor. In fact, it has houses a 2775 mAH battery which is smaller than the 3040 mAH battery of the iphone 11 pro. However since it has a more efficient chip set, it is safe to say that the battery has not got any worse than its predecessor, rather expect its battery life to be somewhat similar.
Lastly, the price of the iphone 12 pro is the same as what the 11 pro was priced at last year. It starts at $999 for the base 128gb model and goes up to $1299 for the 512gb model.
So the question is whether is it worth buying? Well, if you have the iphone 11 pro of last year then it makes sense to stick with it and skip the 12 pro. You wont be really missing out on anything. However if you do not have an iphone and if you absolutely want the latest and greatest and if your willing to pay the hefty price tag, then go for it.
