How one plus has become the leading force in the indian premium smartphone market?

When OnePlus launched its first mobile phone nearly five years ago, its main target market was the US and Europe. India was nowhere in its radar. The Chinese company wanted to be an online brand and operate in the premium smartphone market. At the time however, India was still in its developing stage and the premium smartphone pie was small.

What happened soon after was surprising. Within five months a lot of users from India were buying the phone on Amazon’s global website using a US address and then auto forwarding it to India through Aramex, a Dubai logistics company.

Within the next few years with the release of the one plus 6 in 2018, one plus emerged as the top smartphone brand in India's fast-growing premium phone market, outstripping stalwarts like Samsung and Apple.

The reason for one plus being so popular in India is because OnePlus handsets have been considered to be value-for-money as the majority of the population in India are unable to afford the high priced flagships (such as Samsung and Apple phones) which cost a minimum of $1000 (or Rs 75000). In short OnePlus gives you the best “bank for your buck” and is nowhere behind Apple & Samsung.

In recent times, OnePlus phones have outperformed most high end flagships. That can partly be attributed to the extra RAM that OnePlus phones have compared to most other smartphones. In fact high smartphone brands such as Samsung and Huawei are still to catch with the OnePlus in terms of performance.

OnePlus has also been successful in scoring a 100% satisfaction rate in terms of quality as their phones have always been graced with beautiful designs made out of premium materials, including metal and glass. It is hard to imagine that OnePlus has made such beautiful looking phones that cost hundreds less than the competition.

Although the cameras, might not have had the kind of features found on the high end flagships, the cameras still have always held up and in the last 2 years, the cameras have indeed been fantastic and almost on par with phones like the iphone 11 pro max (of 2019).

Due to the above reasons OnePlus has certainly shaken up the industry and made things a lot more competitive. They have went from being relatively unheard of to becoming a the most popular high-end phone manufacturer in India in a very short space of time, and that demands respect from the industry. OnePlus continues to dominate the smartphone market in India and will probably continue to do so for the next few years.
